Why was my review deleted?

Why was my review deleted?

Your review could have been removed for many reasons, but most commonly it was removed because it has little to do with the submission. The overall point of the NG review system is to discuss your opinion about a movie or game, either to the author or to others who might read it.

The review box is not meant for you to criticize the author directly, but rather just this specific work. The author is looking for feedback to what you liked or hated about this submission and stating how much you hate the author personally and threatening him or telling that he should not submit any more works is off point. Saying this should be "Blammed" or "this is gay" offers nothing to the author and often discourages them to stop making works. Newgrounds feed off user created content and being insulting to others is not tolerated.

Your review should not concern itself on whether it is on the front page or not. How is the author supposed to know what the Newgrounds staff is going to put on there? It is unfair to criticize someone for something they have no control over. The staff will often give exposure to authors they feel have potential and it is their call to whether they want to highlight it or not.

Your review should also not concern itself with other users' reviews. If you find a review that needs to be removed, flag it and it will be looked at. If you must converse with another user, then use the PM system. Newgrounds reviews system is not the YouTube comment system; your focus should be on the submission and not another users' opinion.

For things they do have control over like bugs, they really should be PM'ed to the author directly. If something is bugged then how can you give a fair review?

Common sense is welcomed when you are reviewing a submission. If a submission is blatant garbage, there is little need for it to have any comments. Insulting and giving attention to those who seek it will not help solve the problem. In addition, stating a submission is stolen helps no one and does not help to get the submission removed any faster. The only one who can do anything is one of the Newgrounds staff, contact one of them, and do not review it.

Do not be afraid of being critical of a submission, but do have some facts to back up why you are being harsh. What did you not like? Was the music terrible? Was the animation poor? Was it too short? Were the sounds too soft or too loud? These are the things authors are looking for and want to hear from you.

As well, do not be afraid of telling what you liked. You loved a submission, so what did you enjoy the most from it? Did the submission make you feel anything, like sorrow or humor? Was the submission original in its plot, etc?

Your reviews do not have to be overly detailed, but remember why you are reviewing; you are reviewing to express yourself to the author and to others. Giving good feedback that is relevant is important and is a privilege that is given to you. Make good use of it or it could be taken away.

I'll just have to try harder next month eh, Rev?

yeah, I guess so.

But if a piece of garbage submission isn't seriously reviewed, the author can get spammer friends (and probably alts) to give it 10 reviews, which are much more rarely deleted than low reviews (barring spam and advertising in the former). If they get enough of these and no honest reviews, they can easily take Underdog of the Week (which they have done before).

I'm not saying that garbage with awards directly hurts anyone, but I think it would make NG either look corrupt or powerless to potential newcomers.

I guess the point I was making was, "Don't feed the trolls." If someone can write a proper review for them then great, but nine times out of ten it's off topic insulting them, which ends up being removed.

If you see a flash that's trying to steal UotW then report it to Wade or a Mod.

I was under the impression that leaving an obvious bug in a flash was reason enough for any lost review scores said bug costs a flash author. I mean, if it's bad enough to cause people to give low scores (and if you can plainly tell it's the flash, not your computer, doing it), how hard could it have been to spot in the first place? Isn't the author responsible for making his flash work properly?

Also, how much constructive criticism is 'enough' when giving something a low score, in your opinion?

I'm talking about sticky keys that they'd often blame the author for, as well as it not loading at all. There is no way to give a proper review if you can't give a game a fair chance.

And for constructive enough, it depends.

This btw is NOT a flagging guide. It's for users who stumble on my page after being banned or looking for answers on why their review(s) was possibly removed.

Ah, OK. In situations where it won't load, I'll not know if it's my computer or the flash anyway (it normally turns out to be my computer, too. -__-).

And the thing about enough / not enough was more brought on by something that happened ages ago, which basically caused me to stop reviewing crap games:

1: I gave a game a zero, and wrote a few paragraphs explaining why.
2: Review mod A, after something unrelated to said review is sorted out, PMs me saying it's OK.
3: Review mod B deletes it.
4: I have a chat with B, and we come to an agreement about how to make it better.
5: I post it again, with the changes approved by B.
6: Review mod C deletes it.

...I kind of stopped trying after that. : /

whenever i want you all i have to do is dream

I love how mods are just regular people who have no actual idea on what the hell they are doing and end up doing really stupid things for incredibly stupid reasons. Such as the example given by Sheizenhammer.

p.s. I stumbled across your page because I was clicking on people from the "who's online now" thing.

We are just regular people. We are just volunteers and sometimes we aren't always on the same page. The review guidelines are open to interpretation to each review mod just like the law is for a judge. Some mods are harsh while others are lax like real life judges.

one thing i hate portal spammers that get portal buddies to give the submission 10 n 5 s

If a very popular flash gets a negative review, the review will likely be deleted in the future, no matter how constructive it is. A few survive but that's a minority.

You can't really avoid that because every review moderator thinks differently.

That's why very high rated games and videos will never have several negative reviews, even if the submission is flawed.

Well, if you typed this out, I'd feel sorry for your aching wrists.
Hmm, I guess it was good I stopped reviewing things a long time ago.

With your permission I will open a thread after my ban expires and ask users to flag all my reviews as abusive, and will ask you then to delete them (since review mods can only delete reviews if they are flagged by 2 (?) different people, right?).

I have too many short ones, too many 10-scorers and want to review some games much more detailed.

Plus, my English has gotten much better.

Thanks beforehand :)

No way. Just send a PM to WadeFulp and tell him that you want your reviews removed and he will do it for you.

I have not made a review yet but thank you.

Tell malachy hes the worst mod on the site, review and bbs.

Be a man and tell him yourself.

No one cares about reviews. Everyone cares about how much the rating is.

One thing I've realized in order to please the public with your review, you have to act immature and not focus an the art or anything. In my review for Quest of the Manwhore it is considered "useless" even though I was saying it had good art and a smooth loop. That kinda bugs me, I mean I just want to tell the author that they did a real great job and be proud.
I mean I hate it if I get a review that is "Lol funny" and that is it.
Oh well.

Why are people mean to Malachy? E.g. Dew.
Malachy is a swell fella.

But all that stuff you said above is why I hardly ever review.
I never have anything to say that someone else hasn't already.

I don't really know why people dislike Mal so much, tbh.

This is where I link everyone who messages me telling me I'm going to hell, or I need to go to hell etc.

Yep. This is the first stop on the way to Hell.

Quick question here.

A few of my flash reviews got deleted because the RM {review mod} thought it was abusive, even though I only judged them by their flash and not them as a person. Sometimes I can be harsh with my reviews, but I always point to his/her specific work on how they could do better, and my review gets deleted anyways. Did the RM who deleted my review simply overreact to what I said or what?

Without the actual reviews, I can't say. Either post it in the Review Answers thread or PM it to me.

Why was my review deleted?

The review mods hate you.

Well hate to say this and it has been said time and time again, but the Newgrounds Review System is a YouTube comment section for praise. With the automatic 10 and just saying...

"I liked it! It was really cool!"

Now maybe that's just the pompous asshole in me talking in which case it probably is, but when Review Moderators say not to leave one line remarks saying "it sucks" and not giving any reason why and thus saying that it's not the YouTube comments section and then others can go by by just saying "it was awesome" and not give their reasons either, then it becomes a double standard.

Oh but of course all this means nothing and I'm wrong anyways.

Unlimited, unfounded praise is bad, but not abusive, which is what the Review Mods are only meant to control. There is really nothing the Review Mods can do about it since if you tried to crack down on it, you will have disgruntled users who feel wronged with their positive review removed and then they in turn will leave NG.

People don't come to an entertainment site to write essays about the fine points of Flash animation/games they come to be entertained and just to ask them not to be an ass to the amateur contributors of the site is in itself a stretch it seems.

How would an abusive review club be received, if it was done properly?
Like, not a club about "FLAG EVERY FUCKING REVIEW", but actually only flagging the abusive ones, and nothing else?

Not going to happen in any form. Getting users to collude in order to earn gimme whistle points is frowned upon. See something, inform a review mod and it'll be dealt with.
